Waterborne diseases are caused by drinking water contaminated with pathogens.  Common diseases include:

CHOLERA

An estimated 2.9 million cases and 95,000 deaths occur annually worldwide​​.

DIARRHEAL DISEASES

Responsible for 1.6 million deaths each year, primarily among children under five​​.

TYPHOID FEVER

Causes approximately 11–20 million cases and between 128,000 and 161,000 deaths annually​​

WATER-WASHED DISEASES

These diseases arise from inadequate water for hygiene:

TRACHOMA

A leading cause of blindness, affecting about 1.9 million people globally​​

SCABIES AND SKIN INFECTIONS

Common in areas with poor hygiene due to limited water availability

In response to these critical issues, the Hammanskraal project was implemented to tackle the severe water and sanitation challenges faced by the community. This initiative specifically targeted the local school, which had been severely affected by the problems outlined above.

PROJECT ACTIONS:

Water Purification: Installation of advanced water purification systems to ensure that students and the community have access to clean, safe drinking water.

Sanitation Facilities: Construction of modern, hygienic toilets in the school, with separate facilities for boys and girls, and improved handwashing stations.

Hygiene Education: Implementation of comprehensive hygiene education programs for students to promote proper handwashing and personal hygiene.

REDUCTION IN DISEASE INCIDENCE:

With the introduction of clean water and proper sanitation facilities, there has been a significant decrease in waterborne diseases and hygiene-related illnesses among students.

IMPROVED SCHOOL ATTENDANCE:

The reduction in health-related absences has led to better student attendance and engagement in learning.

ENHANCED EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES:

Healthier students are more likely to perform better academically, and the focus on hygiene education has empowered students to adopt healthier practices.
